5 Social Media Marketing Myths BUSTED

Myths InstaWhen it comes to social media marketing, every entrepreneur has their own theories.

Some of these theories are just pure fiction.

I feel that most misconceptions about social media marketing come from business owners who are just looking for an excuse to not engage in social media, for whatever reasons they might have: they might be intimidated by the technology, they might be overwhelmed by the workload, or they might just be lazy.

Still, there’s no good excuse for jumping to false conclusions about what could arguably be the greatest revolution in publishing since the invention of the printing press.

Sick of the lies? Good! Here are five social media marketing myths… BUSTED!

1- Introverts are bad at social media marketing

Social media is social. Introverts… not so much.

So if you’re an introverted entrepreneur, you might be tempted to steer clear of social media, or even marketing all together.

But what many introverts don’t realize is that they often have many qualities that make them excellent at social media.  2- It will take up ALL your time

Social media can indeed devour your valuable time and focus, but it doesn’t have to.

You just need to be strategic about how you manage your social media presence.

You can save a lot of time if you plan out your social media campaign and use an application like HootSuite to schedule your posts.

Careful though, you don’t want to completely automate your social media presence, because you don’t want to give the false impression that a lazy robot is running your company.

Find a balance between live human interaction and automated posts by scheduling your content posts and checking in 1-5 times a day to respond as a live human.

3- Your competition isn’t on social media, so you don’t need to be on it either

Companies who say this have got it all backwards.

It doesn’t matter if your competition is on Instagram. What matters is… is your target on there? In fact, if your target is engaging on a particular platform and you’re not on there because your competition isn’t, consider it a blown opportunity to dominate that conversation.

4 – You need to be on every single platform

Ugh. No.

It is better to be present and fully engaged on a handful of platforms than zombie on every single platform. Do not leave accounts unattended or inactive. Do some research and find where your target is most active and go there. Move with them when they get tired of it. If you don’t know where to start, look at the Big 3 first (Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn) and then seriously consider YouTube because it’s essentially Google.

 5 – Marketing on social media is just a trend

There’s nothing new about social media marketing.

Sure, the technology is new. But don’t be distracted by flashing lights and bells and whistles.

Social media marketing is about creating the kind of content that your preferred audience cares about. It’s about initiating and cultivating relationships. It’s about being consistent with your branding and disciplined with campaigning.
