Is Perfectionism Ruining Your Social Media Presence?

Today, I want to talk about being a perfectionist, and how it ruins our lives 😉

No, seriously.

I have found from personal observation that most, if not all, business owners, freelancers and entrepreneurs tend to be perfectionists, or they’re more perfectionist than “normal” people.

This is a good thing. And it’s a bad thing.

It’s a good thing because as business owners, we don’t have a boss to answer to, so it’s important that we have really high standards so that our product or service is high-quality.

So that makes sense. But, it can become a problem, specifically, when you’re putting out social media content.

It becomes a problem when you create a piece of content, and then you fine-tune it, and then you unfine-tune it, and then you re-fine-tune it, and re-unfine-tune it…  know what I’m talking about?

You never feel that it’s perfect enough to publish and so you falter, you stall, and you just don’t put out that much content, or any content for that matter.

This is not a good thing, because when it comes to putting out social media content, you need to be consistent, and you need to be productive.

The harsh truth is, and I know this is a hard thing to hear (because I’m a perfectionist too, and I don’t like it when people tell me this), but the truth is, it’s never going to be completely perfect.

Even if you think you’ve got it perfect, you can never with 100% accuracy and certainty know exactly how your audience is going to respond to it.

There’s always going to be some element of surprise.

So, you can do all the research on your target audience and put in all the preparation that you can, know your brand, know your target, know your business, know your product, know your service, know yourself, know your values, know everything, and still there’s a small element of magical pixie dust that you have no control over.

You don’t have control over everything.

I know, it’s horrible to think of this, but you don’t have control over everything. You’re wasting time, and focus and energy not pushing out the content when it’s close enough to perfection.

So, the way around this is to create a content schedule and then stick to it. Now, this is where you can use your perfectionism skills… to stick to the schedule.

If you decide that you’re going to put out a video once every week on Friday, then you do it every week on Friday. Or, if you’re going to put out a blog every Tuesday, then you do it every Tuesday.

Trust me, if you make it a point to stick to the schedule, you will get close enough to perfection when that deadline approaches.

And you’ll put it out, and then what you do is, you gauge how your audience reacts. See what works and what doesn’t work, and then adjust your approach for next time, and that’s how you get better.

But, you’re not going to be able to adjust, and you’re not going to be able to get better, if you don’t put something out in the first place.

So, my suggestion is, get it as close to perfection as you can, but stick to your schedule, put it out, gauge the response and adjust for next time, and this is the best way to consistently put out great content and grow and learn from it in the process.
