How to Prevent Unwanted Tags in Facebook

It’s happened to all of us. You’re at your laptop, working hard, and out of the blue, you get a notification from Facebook saying that you’ve been tagged in a photo or video or comment made by someone else.

Dread washes over you. What is it? What have you been tagged in? A relevant article? An unflattering photo? An embarrassing video?embarassing

Most of our friends don’t mean to be insensitive when it comes to tagging, it’s just that when you’re a small business owner with a presence on Facebook, you have to be ultra-sensitive about protecting your brand. Something as innocent as a funny snapshot at a family picnic could be interpreted as grossly unprofessional and harm your business in some way. Even if it’s your personal account thats been tagged, these occurrences always have a way of leaking out. You know the saying: “if you don’t want your mom or client to see it, don’t post it.”

Thing is, by the time you pick yourself off the kitchen floor (or Starbucks, or whatever passes for your small business office) and un-tag yourself, who knows how many of your friends (some of whom might be business contacts) have seen the offending post in their Facebook news feed?

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to go back in time and prevent the tagging from happening in the first place? You’re in luck! There is a way to prevent unwanted tags and you don’t need a time-travelling DeLorean or T.A.R.D.I.S. to do it. Follow these simple steps and you will be alerted whenever someone attempts to tag you in a post, and then you will have the option of approving the tag or not:

  1. Log into your Facebook account
  2. Click on the wheel symbol in the upper right hand corner and select Privacy Settings from the pulldown menu
  3. Select Timeline and Tagging from the menu list on the left
  4. Under Who can add things to my timeline? find Review posts friends tag you in before they appear in your timeline and click on Edit.
  5. Select Enabled and Close.

And there you have it: now you can avoid any incriminating tags, whether you’re concerned about looking unprofessional, or even just less than perfect according to your inner diva 😉
